About

Welcome to my Rolfing® website.

“Over the years your bodies become walking autobiographies, telling friends and strangers alike of the minor and major stresses of your lives.”

Marilyn Ferguson

Whether you decide to work with me or another Rolfer, my intention for you it to better understand how the Rolfing method of Structural Integration might help you improve your bodies flow and function in life.   If you are having a structural issue from a past injury/accident, or feel as though you are just not feeling ‘right’, feel your balance is off, don’t feel as young as you used to feel, or just wish to improve your body flow and function, Rolfing can probably help.  Rolfing works comprehensively to free the connective tissue throughout the entire body that allows for freer movement, improved posture, and enhanced energy flow.

I was drawn to Rolfing while living in New York City in 1979 when I was working as an actor-singer.  It made such an impact on my body and well-being- since our body and psyche are one and the same- I realized I would one day learn this approach.  When I was certifed as a Rolf Practitioner in 1985, I built a private practice In N.Y.C. and Washington, D.C. working with those folks from the performing arts, especially singers, and then attracting business and Wall street folks, artists and musicians, those from the medical and therapy fields, yoga and martial arts types, dancers and runners, professional athletes and many other individuals who sought to improve their flow and function in life.

Just completing my 25th year of doing this work, I have had the honor to helping hundreds of individuals improve their relationship to Gravity, making movement easier, and releasing the stress and holding that many had carried for years without ever recognizing it as ‘stress’.  When the major segments of the body begin to balance one over the other through the Rolfing process by releasing held stress, it is hard to imagine that it was ever any other way.  When I received my original 10 session series, I was shocked at just how much holding,  tightness, and pain my body had been carrying.  An actor friend said he saw me in the lobby of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC after I had completed the Basic Rolfing 10-series and he told me that he thought, “Whatever David has done I am going to do it too.”  After I got certified, I took him through the Rolfing 10-series and he has come to me for ongoing Rolfing sessions for the next twenty five years.

I always tell potential clients not to think about 10 sessions tough; just think about doing the first one and you can decide on how or if to precede from there.  People come to this work for many reasons but what all these reasons have in common is that we are all human beings who take on stress from the experiences we have in our lives, especially in todays intense world. Day by day, we accumulate tension, until our metabolism is affected and it directly affects our movement, our breathing, our awareness.

We now scientifically know that when a group of muscles acquire a certain degree of holding, the brain will become anesthetized from that area of the body.  This is a survival strategy because the brain cannot keep receiving a message that there is a problem; it needs to deal with many other issues that need attending to answer life’s constant need for adaptation.  And so it just cuts off and focuses on other issues and yet that holding that is preventing the movement of energy needs freeing.

My personal style is gentle and non-aggressive which means that we will never go past your pain threshold (up to it but never into it), ever, and you are in charge.  Because we humans have natural defense mechanisms to help us survive, we cannot go past our limits lest we drive those defenses deeper.
